The Great Comet of 1812 at MTSU

Story by Emma Pickett

You have probably heard of the famous novel “War and Peace”, but you’ve never seen it reimagined like this before.

“Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812” follows the character Natasha as she

navigates her life in Moscow Russia while her fiancé is on the front lines of the war.

This musical was written and composed by Dave Malloy in 2012 and opened on Broadway

in 2016. Since then, it has been performed by numerous theater companies and colleges.

Now it is making its way to MTSU.

Junior, Cameron Miller is no stranger to the Tucker Theater stage and has performed in five

shows now he will be playing Pierre, one of the lead roles.

“One of my favorite things about Pierre is how honest he is and how honest and open he is

about how he feels. And I see myself in that a lot.”

With 17 actors in the show, you are going to be able to relate to one or more of the

characters that they are portraying.

The show has a very personal feel to a lot of the cast and production team because it is a

student success production. Meaning that it is completely student-directed, produced,

choreographed and designed.

MTSU offers programs such as this to give students ways to let their creativity shine and

allow them to get real experience before graduation.

Senior theater major Malana Harris is making her directorial debut in a college space as the

Director of the show.

“I think it’s something I’ve always been interested in. But I think where it started was my

first fundamentals of directing class with my mentor Lauren Shouse, and just seeing how

she works and the beautiful stories that she is able to create really inspired me to want to

pursue that also.”

Performances will be April 9th through the 11th at Tucker Theater, with tickets available for

purchase on the MTSU theater and dance website. However, tickets are free to students

with their student ID.

Don’t miss your chance to see The Great Comet of 1812.
