Middle Tennessee State University’s Dance Program is presenting their annual student
dance gala from March 20 to March 21 at Tucker Theater.
The dance gala is completely student-produced, choreographed, and designed. This is a
time where dancers can let their creativity shine and bring their choreographic knowledge
to the stage.
Six brand new pieces will debut on the stage at the gala from six different choreographers.
The pieces range from styles in jazz, modern, contemporary and fusion of styles.
For some choreographers, this is the first time that their work will be on the Tucker Theater.
Senior Dance Major Anna Conar has performed is the student gala for three years and she
is excited to step into a new role of choreographer. Conar’s piece is entitled “Altercate.”
“It is a modern piece with contemporary elements. It is about the feeling of anger and
fighting amongst other people, when you realize that the true battle is within yourself.”
Another choreographer, senior Dance Major Natalie McCutcheon, has been
choreographing for the student gala for three years. McCutcheon is no stranger to the
Tucker Theater stage, and this will be her farewell as it is her last semester at MTSU.
“My piece ‘Capillary’ is based off an image of a water ripple and playing with those
elements.”
The show highlights the human experience with its wide range of emotions and dynamics.
The dancers have been working on their pieces for around five months with planning,
researching, casting and creating movements.
Xan Barnell is the student gala coordinator who oversees making sure the show runs
smoothly and performed with ease.
“I’m glad to see the dynamic range shown through each piece. I’m proud of myself and my
friends that are working hard to make this show possible! It will be an experience worth
watching,” said Barnell.
Tickets are free with your MTSU Student ID however, if not a student you can purchase
tickets and see more information about the show at https://app.arts-people.com/index.php?ticketing=mtsu.
