Middle Tennessee State University’s theater department is performing Clue Feb. 26 to March 1 at Tucker Theater.
The stage adaptation is based on the iconic 1985 movie directed by Jonathan Lynn. This film became a comedy classic and is still performed and watched to this day.
However, the murder mystery did not start when actor Tim Curry took on the role of Wadsworth.
The board game that everyone has played on family game nights and get-togethers was released in 1949 as Cluedo and was created by Anthony E. Pratt. The game soared in popularity and is still being sold to this day.
The stage adaptation came decades after the board game's release in 2017 and was performed by Bucks Playhouse in New Hope, Pennsylvania. Since then, many theater companies have put this murder-mystery comedy on their own stages, including MTSU.
Arron Johnson is the director of Clue: On Stage at MTSU and since working for the theater department since 2018 this is the first year where he was given the opportunity to step into a creative role.
“It is just a farcical comedic whodunit tale about these guests who are invited to a house under the premise of blackmail and when they are there the blackmailer is killed. So, one by one each of them is worried that they will be next,” said Johnson.
Clue is not a show with an overall message about life or how to be a better person but when asked about what he wanted the audience to take away from this show this is what Johnson said.
“I think the biggest thing that audiences are going to walk away from would be just how alive each person feels on the stage. Even though there is a film blueprint of these characters and the story each of them has been able to create their own versions of it.”
Sophomore theater major Emma Lilly plays the role of Yvette the maid.
“My character is definitely a character that I have never gotten to play before. I got to learn a French accent for the role and getting to work with people I have worked with in the past and new people has been a very fun and rewarding creative process,” said Lilly.
Make sure to stop by Tucker Theater and try to figure out who did it, where, and with what?
