Dekalb County votes on new jail plan

Jan. 31st

Written by Mickey Sandlin

The Dekalb County Council met for the first time in over four months at the end of January.

The meeting detailed a long conversation on the plan to build a new jail for the area. The Tennessee Corrections Institute voted in December to keep the existing jail with a plan of action to address its deficiencies.

This followed a November referendum when voters rejected the county’s plan to increase bonds in order to build a judicial center and jail complex.

The plan for the new Dekalb County jail was proposed to be a dormitory style building, but the plan was not agreed upon by the council, ending in a pause on the progress in the plan.

Mayor Matt Adcock and his fourteen council members will reconvene at a later date to further discuss further plans for the new jail.
